Tesha Samuels, a Sickle Cell Warrior, became a recipient of an autologous gene therapy transplant at the National Institute of Health in 2019. Learn about her own lived experience with the life-changing therapy re-ignited by a profound passion to advocate and provide hope for those suffering from sickle cell and other rare diseases

Dr. Edward Donnell Ivy, MD, MPH
Vice Chief Medical Officer
Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA)

Dr. Ivy uses his personal and professional experiences to improve care for individuals with health conditions, including sickle cell disease, by working collaboratively to strengthen the public health infrastructure. Currently, Dr. Ivy is the Health Education Coordinator with the Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc. (ABC). He also serves as the Vice Chief Medical Officer for the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA). Before joining the ABC and SCDAA, Dr. Ivy worked with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as the Program Director of the Hemoglobinopathies Program, which included the Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Program (SCDTDP), the Sickle Cell Disease Newborn Screening Program (SCDNBSP) and the Thalassemia Program. Dr. Ivy worked at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health where he was part of the team that developed the NHLBI Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Recommendations of 2014. Dr. Ivy completed his medical school training at East Carolina University School of Medicine. After starting a residency in Pediatrics, Dr. Ivy realized his interest in public health and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health where he received his Masters in Public Health with honors.

CNN anchor and moderator Sara Sidner continued as moderator, guiding the audience through a discussion with Dr. Nina AndersonDr. Jigisha TamakuwalaInna Swinton, and Renée Pardo. This panel delved into the influence of maternal figures on empathy, compassion, and peace, highlighting the challenges mothers face in nurturing these values in today’s society.

  • Walk/Run at your own pace at a local park for 20 minutes
  • 5 Minute Cool Down

The webinar featured: Dr. Nina Anderson of TOVA Community Health, Dr. Baia Lasky from the American Red Cross, and Dr. Monique Bowman of Harmony Health and Wellness Center. Viewers learned about sickle cell disease, the importance of blood donation, and naturopathic treatment.
